I don't think so either - and I believe the support chips were released in
various speed versions too, so they'd have to be swapped out along with the
CPU to bump the speed up.

Indeed. I've got some boards that were "revision 2" and some that were
"revision H" - the only difference seems to be in the type of IC decoupling
caps used. There are both types of case label, but there doesn't seem to be
any correlation between board and case type - I'm not sure if they were like
that within Acorn though, or whether it's just that case lids and boards have
been mixed up over the years. (There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the
type of PSU used, either)

Hmm, a 32016 for one of the emulators would be nice.
