Have you got a Model B you can try it in?  I had exactly the same
issues with mine, initially, in two Masters, but it would work in a B.

As it turned out, John did an update to the code on the chip on the
gommc, which sorted it out for me, after I sent it back for upgrading
- Since you say John's got it at the moment, I presume he'll have put
it to the latest version if it's not already..  Maybe you could check
that with him,

Otherwise, all I can suggest is you check all the link settings
thoroughly on the Master, making sure all are at system default,
before re-installing it..
