Whilst I don't yet have a functional MODE 7 display, I did try something.

I can switch in and out of MODE 7 using the MODE command, even though I 
can't see anything in MODE 7. So I switched to MODE 7, then typed a syntax 
error, then tried to switch back to MODE 6. It was frozen.

That suggests to me that the problem is not caused by the MODE 0-6 character 
rendering routines?!? Agreed?
