I believe a crawl of this kind was in Elite - The Executive Edition, a
version which Bell & Braben handed out to a few people but was never
commercially released.  It's now available as a disk image from Bell's
website.

It's mentioned in the description of The Executive Edition in the
alt.fan.elite FAQ, along with "a mock-battle, in which you are scored
for number of enemies destroyed and penalised for usage of missiles."
which I never found.

Haven't heard of the crawling message in the 2nd processor version
before, tho.  Interesting find!
