Or cc65, which is a C compiler but has a nice simple assembler built in.

Either from cc65.org or my (out of date) BBC version

Phill,

You might want to check out SWIFT, an IDE for programming 6502 code,
and also BeebAsm, a 6502 assembler for the Beeb:

www.retrosoftware.co.uk/swift
www.retrosoftware.co.uk/beebasm

Sounds like a good fit for what you're after. You can get help and
support, if you register on the forums and ask any questions you might
have.

Peter.
