It was my guess that with the tube installed it's failing to write to  
CMOS. Reading from it seems OK, although after you've failed to write  
to it (with *CONFIGURE), then reading also seems to fail (*STATUS  
begins to hang) until you've physically switched it off and on again.  
In this state, I find that *ROMS also hangs, which is a little baffling.

I'm afraid that's currently beyond my beeb skills. :(

Though I do know that *STATUS is showing the correct settings, and  
once you remove the copro, everything works fine, including *CONFIGURE  
again.
