That's probably true with the 8271, however, a drop in circuit that 
emulated the WD177x chips would have use for more than just the Acorn 
machines, as there are a lot of machines that use 177x chips, even more 
if you count things like the WD279x and WD179x chips also which are 
mostly software compatible.
