Indeed.  I've not tried XFER, but I've had some success making old DOS
programs work better under XP by doing the following..

Right click desktop, create new shortcut, type command.com and finish.
Right click the new shortcut, select Properties, and select compatability tab.
You have various options here, usually I just pick to run in Windows
95 mode if I'm having that much trouble.

Then clicking on the icon will give you a DOS prompt that behaves a
little better with old programs than the normal one.. You can drag
this to your start menu if, like me, you hardly ever get to see your
desktop.. (bit like the real thing in that respect. lol.)
