It's all turned out to be a rotten false alarm, sadly!
The drive worked for 50 minutes. It was showing a lot of disc errors so
I ran a verify on it. This was always my usual procedure when the drive
was cold: leaving it on for half an hour or so and exercising it a bit
always brought most of the unreadable sectors back to life.
Then I tried to DUMP a longish file which I hadn't been able to load
previously and it got part way through until the drive light went out
and nothing else happened. I didn't get a disc error, the Master just
waited. After I pressed BREAK, I found I couldn't access the disc any
more, although the Adaptec LED still blinks every time I press BREAK.
Since then, it worked briefly a couple of times but has now stopped
working altogether.
Has anyone got any ideas?
Best wishes,
Ian

I don't remember the original thread/message, but you might want to archive
off any useful data from the drive before it really does go bang :-)
cheers
