(Mike) Subject: A few Econet questions My suggestion, (backed up by a fading meory of talking to a service engineer), is that the chip space is provided for 'in the field repairs'. It is susually easier to fry the output device by a bad connection, and it would have been an easier repair to snip out the SMT device and replace it with a DIL, in those days when SMT was not as common outside manufacturers.
