Subject: MDFS as Local Filing System

Closest I've been to this was to write a utlity to scan a (crashed)
Level 3 fileserver hard disc and copy off all the files to a backup
set...  This was 20 years ago..

It's generally easier to write a read-only access to another
filesystem that a write-enabled one, due to having to cope with the
freespace maps, etc..
