Subject: Econet over UTP ?
Has anybody tried running standard econet over UTP (category 5) cable
over a reasonable distance (20M or so)?
I ask, because I've finally got around to clearing a space in a
cupboard in the dining room, near the TV, in which there is now sat a
Master and floppy drive! I did this with the intent of having it
available so I could throw a disc at it every now and again to copy
onto a GoMMC, for subsequent archiving off. The rest of my acorn kit
is in the attic, three floors up! As it happens, there is a cat 5
cable running all the way up there already, but it's currently
carrying ethernet, so that only gives me two spare pairs of cables.
Should be enough for econet's clock and data lines, but I don't know
if econet will work without an earth connection as well, and I'm 90%
certain it is UTP and not STP cable, so no shield to use as earth...
It's not essential for the task in mind, but it would be nice to have
it hooked up to the fileserver machine to allow me to use it for more
than that one task. I could then justify leaving it there..
