There was a thread on here a couple of years ago which I summarised
at http://mdfs.net/Docs/Comp/Econet/Versions
 
In summary:
   NFS 3.xx - unbuffered byte access, BBC hardware
  ANFS 4.xx - buffered byte access
  ANFS 4.0x - BBC hardware
  ANFS 4.1x and later - BBC Master hardware
 NetFS 5.xx - ARM/RISC OS
