I've had the same thing with some of my own machines, but I've always
ended up replacing the drives. Examples are a Macintosh SE/30 - much
too hard to keep removing the back cover just to tap the hard drive,
and too risky to slam the whole machine down on the desk (which also
worked). Plus an MFM drive in an Amstrad PC1640, also too hard to keep
removing the cover, and it started to grow bad sectors all over it
anyway.
