Certainly the possibilities are interesting.  Once it's actually
reliable, then it would certainly be possible to have an econet
fileserver hosted on the 'net...  Not quite sure how latency issues
would affect it, though...

You are still on dial-up, aren't you?  With prices these days, surely
a broadband connection would work out cheaper anyway? I know relatives
paying around ?7 month for "unlimited" usage. (from O2, if you are a
customer - and you only need to grab a free pre-pay SIM card to become
one of those - and get ?50 cashback for ordering via quidco... )  Pick
up something like an old iolan+ terminal server and you've still got
serial ports to talk to.
