Not necessarily - my portable (bought to use when mowing, I take my Zen
now but I got this CD player back when 128Mb MP3 players had a scary
price tag) has a 'shockproof' system. This works by speeding up the disc
to read data faster to fill a buffer which sits between what is being
read from the disc and what is being played. So the CD player switches
between idling (spinning quite slowly) and reading (spinning quite fast).

Best wishes,

Rick.
