It's not subjective at all. It's well-defined elsewhere.
A final couple of references, from sources which are not Ethernet-specific:
Local Area Networks, Prentice Hall, 1984, page 168: "a bridge operates
at the data link level. A bridge can be used for for networks that use
different protocols at the physical layer as long as they have a common
protocol at the data link layer".
Data and Computer Communications, John Wiley, 1989 (this is a well-known
dictionary of terms), page 30: "bridge: the interconnection between two
networks using the same communications method, the same kind of
transmission mediium, and the same addressing structure; also the
equipment used in such an interconnection. Bridges operate at the data
link layer of the OSI model."
