My 7 year-old daughter Ellinor usually names them.

<anecdote type="totally-offtopic">

I always teach my children where their food comes from, and as part of that
we visit local farms, go say 'hi' to our turkey prior to Christmas, etc.

A couple of years ago, she decided to call them Dave and Nigel - we marked
the shells with 'D' and 'N', in the pot they went. Came out, cooled, served
at dinner time. My mother (whom we'd invited) didn't know we'd done this of
course.

During the meal, Ellie pipes up with "Hmm, Dave is a bit tastier than
Nigel."

My mother thinks this is cute, awwh, Ellie named the food. "Did you get
them from the fishmonger, Ellinor?"

Ellie responds with a little more relish than she really should have done
(probably for dramatic effect): "Yeah, we killed them!"

My mother *visibly blanches*. Hypocrite.

So yes, it's a plus ;)
