TALK and MUGINS both use broadcasts to find other clients and
servers. See http://mdfs.net/Apps/Networking/NetGames for MUGINS
and http://mdfs.net/Apps/Networking/Talker for TALK.

Both of them work perfectly on RISC OS and with AUN running over
Ethernet.

You may find TALK easier to use to investigate broadcasts as two
clients running TALK talk to each other, and you can turn debug
output on by pressing Ctrl-T (Test) and manually send another
broadcast with Ctrl-B.

Of course, it means you need three machines working. Two to chat,
and one to monitor.

And of course, the *SERVERS command which sends out ServerFind
broadcasts.

There's sample ServerFind server and client code on the Wiki at
http://beebwiki.jonripley.com/FindServer
