So if I've understood this correctly, the 4-head single-speed
Panasonic NV366 I mentioned earlier uses two of the heads for normal
playback, and only brings the extra heads into play for the perfect
still frame and single frame advance modes?

I seem to remember the heads being spaced at 90 degrees to each other
round the drum, but that may be my brain playing tricks on me. I may
or may not have an NV333 lying around too, which was the 2-head
equivalent of the same machine.

I've certainly got at least one of the JVC/Ferguson/Baird machines
from the very early 80s that were the top-of-the-range front-loaders,
that cost about ?800 new. They draw the tape in with rubber rollers
that wear out, but they've also got Dolby stereo, remote control,
tape-remaining display, and some other stuff. They're huge, crammed
full of circuit boards and weigh about 8 tons.
