Beeb keytops -- and most other keytops from other than the cheapest 
keyboards -- use what's called a double-shot moulding.  The legend is 
moulded into the keytops, and if you look from the back, you'll see the 
two layers.  You'd make a hole in the top before you rubbed away the 
legend.  Some others are engraved and filled -- not very common these 
days but still robust -- and only the cheapest cr*p are silkscreened.
