I agree. This is bizarre. I can offer no explanation at all.

I have not tried it, so I cannot verify whether it works or not. It is quite 
typical of the 512 that one version of a program will work on it and another 
will not.

The one outlined in Robin's book is basically what Essential Software sold, 
and that does work (though they tweaked the ROM slightly so that it 
recognised 896kb; without this tweak it will only recognise 768kb - the 
difference is in the "high memory area" so it doesn't affect many programs).
