I know, but normal sane use of the function keys is to duplicate the 
Desktop behaviour, so F1 returns the key code &181. This is the same as 
the BBC, only accounting for the fact that high-bit-set character codes 
are used. Thus, my brief mental hiccup at "what's poking 128 for?".

At least I didn't say something really stupid like "why are you poking 
'?' into the keyboard buffer?" <grin>
[if your setup can't show that, it's the euro currency symbol]
