Because the author isn't the mailing list, the author is the
author. What you should be asking for is:

What the mailing list *should* do, as everything else in the world
does, is create a header that says:
  'From: <person who wrote the post>'
  'ReplyTo: <address to repond to where the post came from - ie the
   mailing list>
