Yeah my real bugbear is dumbass (usually on US company websites) web 
designers that don't seem to know how to use  drop down lists properly.

Ok fair enough, you are a US company and the majority of your customers 
will be from the US so pre-select that option, no probs so far. But then 
they list everyone else alphabetically and put the USA at the top !
It's not like HTML doen't have a way of dealing with this : <option 
value="USA" selected> and the others <option value="some other country">

It's either not being familliar with HTML, or just plain lazyness.

I'll get off my soapbox now :)
