I have read, somewhere, that /some/ of those square 9V batteries are a
pile of AAAA batteries wired in series.   Most I pulled apart as a kid
were stacked square cells, so it probably depends on the manufacturer.
  Might be worth investigating any dead ones you have to find out.

A google for AAAA 9V certainly brings up a pile of results...
