Posted before I got to that bit of the thread :o)

Thing is, they do work surprisingly well for popping ROMs out.  The
trick is to use a side-to-side motion rather than pulling back to try
and lever the ROM out.  The side-to-side movement is much gentler and
less likely to bend the chip's legs.
