Subject: [OT] ADSL capabilities
> My only complaint is that the download rate is "acceptable" above about
512kbit, while the upload rate is "acceptable" above zero. I once had a
situation where my download was clocking 1.5megabit with an upload rate
measured in characters per minute, seriously I *could* Google, but it
took around 40 seconds for the information to be sent, the line test
read upload rate: zero.
Obvious problem - if there is no acceptable lower limit on the upload
rate, then the world's fastest download will be no use if you can't ask
for stuff.
- I want one of those robot recordings so that when I press a button, it
explains why a users service drops because their upload is preventing the IP
'conversation'... its always our fault that their service drops of course,
even though they pay peanuts (like 0.01%) compared with an uncontended
leased line and STILL don't provide a backup to prevent 'tens of thousands
of pounds of lost business'.
Users' expectations can be unbelievable. We have one organisation which
hangs another router behind ours running VOIP, VPN, all sorts of clever
stuff plus a couple of PCs and a server. All over a cheap as chips business
BB line costing a tiny fraction of what the equipment costs - they don't
even invest in a slighter better designed BB product that is much less
contended for a little more.
They expect us to be CCNA trained and very IP literate (why can't you
configure X firewall for me??) for ?30 a month.
** sigh ** ** climbs off soapbox **.
No wonder I like Dilbert
