Well said Mark.

I was quite taken aback about how rude those comments were.

Whilst we are all entitled to our opinions, if you can't voice them
without being unpleasant then don't - Rick managed to present a
reasonable argument without being rude, perhaps you'd like to try and
again Darren and Phil (and yes, I know you spell it with a double 'l'
.......).

I for one have no idea how to "build up an IDE interface using a 6522
plus a couple of logic chips" so I'm grateful to people like Jon and
Mark Haysman for producing new toys for me to play with. :-)

That is quite a harsh statement. John has contributed many answers and
his
knowledge in this and other forums. If he wants to spend his time
working on
a project, it is surely up to him if he wants to make all details
public,
now or later. There are others that have developed closed BBC addons and
hardware and I don't see the same statements.

We are not forced to buy or support such items and free to develop (and
share if we choose) our own projects.

I agree, that much information is lost due to lack of preservation /
public
release, but that is also often due to legal reasons, copyrighted
information being used in its development, signing of NDAs etc etc. Open
source concepts were not prevalent 30 years ago.

Another point is once this information is made public, how is it
preserved
in the public domain. For example, BBCdocs.com has a large collection of
documents. What happens on my demise? The domain and hosting is paid for
12months in advance, but then would simply disappear.

-Mark
