Hmm, slackware evolved from SLS, and both distros always required a 386 or 
better (I cut my teeth on Linux in the SLS days, running pre-v1 kernels).

Hazy memory is trying to tell me that there was some attempt to port the Linux 
kernel to run on 286 hardware, but I'm not sure if it were ever successful (or 
could be called Linux even if it was)

I think Minix may have run on XT-class hardware - maybe that's what you're 
remembering?
