I'm not sure that you'd gain much over traditional diagnostic exercises, 
though. Reseat chips, pull anything not needed to get the machine to start, 
test PSU & connections, swap RAM banks, check clock and reset lines etc. and 
it's usually possible to narrow things down far enough to do some more 
detailed fault-finding.

I got a PET and FIT, thinking they might be useful, and I've never even used 
them. I think I have the schematics here with me somewhere, should you want to 
try building them :-)
