If you look at the options for DPScan (formerly ImageM*ster), you'll see 
the type/mnemonic disparity a lot, i.e.:

   Clear   - .clr or .690 ?
   Draw    - .drw or .aff ?
   Sprite  - .spr or .ff9 ?

It even goes as far as to offer this for native files that have been 
exposed to RISC OS:
   GIF     - .gif or .695 ?


For what it is worth, .bba doesn't appear to be an in-use file extension 
either! :-)
