Even odder. I've replicated what you've done:

Download BBCZip/zip on PC, copy to DOS floppy, copy to A5000 to $.Utils
Double-click on BBCZip/zip, drag Zip to Utils, settype Zip to BASIC.

Have you got anything odd in your Run$Path ? Can you load Zip and
does it look like a sane BBC BASIC program? It should look like
