I've just ebayed myself a slightly-broken 5MP Canon A550, which will run
CHDK so I can get RAW and manual focus and I can mess with the optics if
necessary (usually shooting down the eyepiece using the camera lenses is
easiest, though, rather than the microscope's camera port). Sergei has some
XYZ vernier stages, so I'll see if I can mount in that so the positioning is
accurate.
If you decap, can you try to keep the legs intact? That means it'll mount
reliably in a ZIF socket to keep things planar (focus will go fairly soon if
it isn't, so it should be easy to tell)
