Side note : One magazine many years ago had a programming exercise which 
was to print a currency amount in words,
For example :  
* 500.00   -  output of  'Five hundred pounds only'
* 565.99  - output of ' Five hundred and Sixty five Pounds  ninety nine 
pence'...
* 50.00   - output of 'Fifty pounds only'

The response included solutions in all manner of languages, including 
BBC BASIC and Wordwise+ of all thing :),
These days though it wouldn't surprise me at all if PHP or Java had an 
inbuilt function for doing it though...
