Hold on, you've just said "Basic" was displayed. Now you've said you
haven't put the ROMs in. The ROMs *must* be in if "Basic" is displayed.

Exactly what did you have plugged in when it started up and said BASIC?

Exactly how far did you get in putting things back one at a time when
it stopped booting up?
