...which would require the widget to be plugged into a router so as to 
permit the machine to carry on its normal IP access [*]. Now we're 
talking microcontrollers and firmware and... the unit price has tripled, 
at least.

     internet via WiFi, but the LAN is intentionally kept completely
     disconnected from The Wired.
