Heh, me and numbers... :-(
I'm probably a "bit" confused, but not *that* much. It predated 56k
modems. Was 33k6 the intermediate step? Would it sync at around 32k? I
never got it to run full speed, just "nearly but...".
If it is any help, it was a "Sportster" which looked like a cheap Tandy
intercom unit. Ugly damn thing, and not enough blinky lights. I liked my
USR Courier, slidey volume switch as well. Whoo.
I have a few 56k's I picked up in boot sales for no good reason, but at
50c, why not? At that sort of price I can unsolder the DB9 and come out
ahead on parts value. ;-) One is a clunky blue brick in an amusingly
flimsy design. Press the sides just right, the modem practically falls
out of its case. The other is an epic [*] yellow flying-saucer Olitec
jobbie that would have been completely at home blu-tak'd to the side of
a Phoebe. Or get two, rip out the modem gunk, fit speakers instead
and... you can see where I'm going right? A yellow Phoebe with yellow
"mickey mouse" ears? No? Well, it gave me a smile...
Best wishes,
Rick.
* - Yes, "epic". I actually checked to make sure it wasn't glow-in-
the-dark as well.
Actually, thinking along those lines, how awesome would it be to
have a netbook, or tablet, or whatever, that looked a sort of
boring beigey-cream in the light, but was totally phosphorescent
in the dark?
