Subject: [Beebsoc] How to detect black ice
I was looking around, after my posting on the BBC list, for ways to
detect black ice. I came across http://www.sensice.com/ which would
appear to work using infrared spectroscopy, so I'm quite pleased I
worked that one out for myself.
But my favourite method is a forum posting:

Surely the best way to discover if the road ahead is slippery is to just
follow another car? - preferably one without ABS or traction control.
When that spins off the road, rolls down the embankment and explodes in
a dramatic fireball, you'll know there's probably black ice ahead.
Proceed carefully past the black ice, pull over, and wait for another
car to come along which you can follow.
