Yeah, indeed.  Given that the Beeb host adapter isn't much more than a
set of memory-addressed latches, I would be inclined to retain that
functionality in pretty much its current form (though probably
reimplemented in a CPLD or something rather than the big pile of
discrete logic) and then attach a microcontroller to the other side.  I
think that'd work out easier and probably cheaper than trying to find a
micro that could be welded directly to the 1MHz bus.
