I've got a couple of ATmega8L here that I used to use as an OpenWII
chip... really ought to play with them more.

Hmm.  Plenty of circuits about.  Mine was a handful of discretes onto
a parallel port - the openwii website is long gone, but google turned
up a similar circuit for the bigger chips:
