I had never realised it was a deficient implementation. It certainly was
fussy, I could never make it work with the SyQuest 20Meg removable media
drives.

There are a number of issues with the host adaptor.  Pin one is usually
marked wrongly, and the pin opposite term power is usually grounded.
These two things when combined usually smoke up your drive's term power
diode.
