Subject: [BeebSoc] A book recommendation, please.
I am far from a Debian Linux expert and have no books to recommend. However
I can try to answer a few of your questions.
The suffixes on the rc scripts relate to different run levels: maintenance,
single user, multi user and so on. The system will execute those rc files
belonging to the current run level.
sbin directories are meant for system/administrative binaries, but I think
functionally it doesn't matter. It is just a semantic (?) way to keep
programs apart, and in a multi user environment the paths may differ
depending on which programs one should have access to. The /usr/sbin
suggests those are system binaries meant for users unlike /sbin which would
be more about the system itself.
The so suffix means shared object, simply a library. You may see numbers
after so which indicates the library version. Without looking it up, I think
ko means kernel object, but I could be wrong on this.
Good luck in your search for knowledge. As far as regular Debian knowledge
goes, you should be able to find a lot of info on the Internet but I see
your point about getting to know the recorder in particular.
Best regards
