They're not all that ruinously expensive even from "normal" channels.
For example:

So you'd be looking at about ?35 to buy enough connectors for 2x16 way
backplanes, probably not a bank-breaking sum.  Or RS would sell you a
64-way Vero backplane for ?58 and you could cut it into four :-)
