There's an internal battery to keep the memory contents alive without 
external power (hence it being branded on the case as "nonvolatile RAM 
module").

Retention time on battery alone was probably awful (memory is 8 x 
SRM2064C-15 ICs), but AFAIK it was still designed as a portable solid-state 
device (rather than something intended to just survive the occasional power 
glitch)
