Yes, it is a parallel interface, the connector has D1-D8 (Texas Instruments
always labelled their data pins the wrong way around). However, the API
has "serial send" and "serial receive" commands, so there is some sort
of serialisation somewhere. I'm not sure, maybe using one bit of the
parallel data.
