Last time the Jovies came around I was hanging up the washing, so I
took a tip from a friend at Uni whose PhD was Comparative Religious
Studies and sat in my garden chair with a cuppa, kept them standing
and started arguing with them.
"The Lord God is the essense of kindness and love"
Is the the same God that told the Isrealites to invite the Caananites
around for dinner and then slaughtered them in their sleep?
"Oh well, they rejected the Lord, I'm sure they had it coming to them"
Yes, I'm sure George Bush and Tony Blair said that when invading Iraq.
"No, they should have accepted the Lord"
But they did. The Isrealites invited them to join their tribe, they
joined the tribe, and the were slaughtered and had their land stolen.
"But the land was promised to them by the Lord"
Yes, I'm sure it was, Manifest Destiny, those pesky natives just have
to get out of the way.
"Err... Shall we talk about Christ's teachings...?"
Christ? That's the Greek translation, isn't it? The Hebrew original
just called him "teacher", not "Christ". The original Hebrew has
nothing about Joshua the Teacher being God's son or the Saviour of
the Jews.
"Joshua? No, Jesus..."
Jesus is the Greek version of the original Hebrew Joshua.
"err..."
And when you get to the Latin translations, it gets even worse,
"Leader" gets translated into "King".
"err..."
:)
