I think the problem is that a standard video recorder tends to mess up
the VBI with head-switching, while S-VHS has a higher bandwidth and
preserves more of the picture.
Not to mention the lack of resolution in VHS, coupled with the inherent
blurring.
It might be possible, as you say, to record a sequence of frames and try
using multiple copies of the data to try to work out what it should
actually be, but then how many domestic capture devices permit that part
of the screen to be captured?
I wonder if somebody has an off-air recording on S-VHS that could be used?
