With a bit of thought, it can't be done with a simple
chip replacement. The 16 pin sockets support a maximum
of 9 address lines, which translates to a maximum of
2^(2*9) = 256 K addresses. We'd need one more address
pin to go to 1 M x 1 chips (i.e. 4 MB).
So only a plug-in contraption (plus probably some flying
wires) would do.
