Yeah, when I first read that years ago I thought:
couldn't they just change, eg. LDX #6:.delay:DEX:BNE delay
to LDX #10:.delay:DEX:BNE delay or something.

Without checking the code, I think the delays are something
like JSR call_a_rts  ... .call_a_rts:RTS so even with that
it would have been simple enough to squeeze in JSR call_2_rts
and find the space for .call_2_rts:JSR again:.again:RTS
